Short Film: Glory At Sea

One of my all time favorite short films. ”

A group of mourners and a man spat from the depths of Hades build a boat from the debris of New Orleans to rescue their lost loved ones trapped beneath the sea. Winner Best Short Film, New Orleans Film Festival 2008;
winner of the Wholphin Award, SXSW Film Festival 2008.

This was the short film by Court 13, directed by Benh Zeitlin, created in 2007 and birthed in 2008, that directly preceded the development and production of “BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD” — winner of the Sundance Grand Jury Prize (2012), and the Cannes Film Festival’s Camera d’Or (2012).”

Three Short Films You Should Probably Watch

Bottle Rocket

Bottle Rocket is a short film directed by Wes Anderson in 1992 (and released in 1994) on which the 1996 feature-length film was based. As a huge Wes Anderson fan, it’s a special experience to watch this short film that pre-dates his directorial debut. It’s great on its own as the story of 3 naive, young wannabe- professional criminals as well as an accompaniment to the feature length film. The black and white may seem very unlike the rest of his films, but his signature style of dialogue and his perfect timing is there.

“MORE tells the story of an old, tired inventor as he struggles through joyless life in a drab and passionless society, leading the same cold and colorless existence accepted by the identical drones around him. At once tortured and inspired by his dreaming of and yearning for his younger carefree days, he struggles to finish the invention he hopes will give his life meaning and worth. His world, and the world of those around him, is transformed when his secret invention is completed. However, his subsequent success does not come without sacrifice. The inventor realizes that the true essence of his inspiration cannot be manufactured.”

The Butterfly Circus

This is one of the most beautiful, uplifting stories I’ve ever watched. “At the height of the Great Depression, the showman of a renowned circus discovers a man without limbs being exploited at a carnival sideshow, but after an intriguing encounter with the showman he becomes driven to hope against everything he has ever believed.”
